These ‘extras’ picture the many lonely people in our society. We know they’re there but they don’t play an active part in our world. For this work they were put together in a large group and were given centre stage.

Deze ‘figuranten’ staan voor de vele eenzame mensen in onze samenleving. We weten dat ze er zijn, maar ze spelen geen actieve rol in onze wereld. Voor dit werk zijn ze in een grote groep geplaatst en heb ik ze de hoofdrol gegeven.

Using small nails, screws and copper wire, I covered an, in small pieces cut wooden bannister with leftovers of printed fabrics, like old linen or cotton, and patinated copper and brass. All this was attached to a stick and the pieces were then put on pieces of wood that I’d covered in black felt.

Ik heb een in stukjes gezaagde houten trapleuning bekleed met restjes handgeverfde en bedrukte stofjes, zoals oud linnen en katoen, en gepatineerd koper en messing. Alles is vastgezet met spijkertjes, schroefjes en koperddraad. Vervolgens heb ik ze op houten stokjes bevestigd en op een met vilt bedekt houten blokje gezet.

Some of the fabric and metal was screenprinted and patinated with excerpts of the Dutch playwright Joost van den Vondel.

Een deel van de lapjes en het metaal is gezeefdrukt en gepatineerd met tekstfragmenten van de toneelschrijver Joost van den Vondel.

The fabrics were screenprinted with dye, but for screenprinting the copper I used a solution of liver of sulphur. This ‘paint’ gives a black patina to the copper.

De stofjes zijn bedrukt met verf, maar voor het zeefdrukken op het koper heb ik een zwavellever oplossing gebruik. Deze ‘verf’ zorgt voor een zwart patina op het koper.

Using small nails and screws I covered pieces of wood with leftovers of dyed and printed fabrics and patinated copper and brass. These blocks were then attached to each other into long strings.

Met spijkertjes en schroefjes heb ik kleine blokjes hout bedekt met restjes handgeverfde en bedrukte stofjes en gepatineerd koper en messing. De blokjes zijn aan elkaar gemaakt tot lange slierten.

Small leftovers of handdyed and printed fabrics and patinated copper and aluminium were attached to pieces of wood. They were then hung in such a way that they can turn round and round.

Restjes handgeverfde en bedrukte stofjes en gepatineerd koper en aluminium zijn op houten planken vastgezet. De planken worden dusdanig opgehangen dat ze rond kunnen draaien.
